ARD AND CAUSE EXTREME DAMAGE TO THE DRIV
E UNIT..NOW LOCATE THE DRIVE READ/WRITE
HEAD. THE HEAD IS VERY SIMILAR IN FUNCTI
ON TO A TAPE RECORDER HEAD AND IS PRONE
TO MALFUNCTION DUE TO EXCESSIVE BUILDUP
OF DIRT, DUST, AND OXIDES FROM THE DISK
SURFACES. USE A Q-TIP WETTED WITH ALCOHO
L OR TAPE HEAD CLEANER TO GENTLY WIPE TH
E SURFACE OF THE HEAD. NEVER CLEAN THE H
EAD WITH AN ABRASIVE SUBSTANCE OR USE ST
RONG SOLVENT CHEMICALS SUCH AS ACETONE.
THE DRIVE READ/WRITE HEAD IS A M
OVEABLE UNIT WHICH TRAVELS ON TWO METAL
RAILS. THESE RAILS ARE PRONE TO COLLECT
BUILDUP OF DUST AND GRIME AND SHOULD BE
WIPED WITH ALCOHOL AND LIGHTLY LUBRICATE
D. LUBRICATION OF ANY PARTS INSIDE THE D
RIVE SHOULD BE VERY LIGHT AS THE PRES
ENCE OF EXCESS OIL IN THE DRIVE UNIT CAN
CON TAMINATE THE DISKS AND/OR CAUSE
DIRT AND DUST ACCUMULATION ON OILY SURFA
CES ONE WAY TO ADD A SMALL AMOUNT
OF LUBRICANT IS TO USE A TOOTHPICK TO P
LACE SMALL DROPLETS OF OIL. DIP THE TOOT
HPICK LIGHTLY IN THE OIL, THEN TOUCHING
THE TOOTHPICK TO THE DESIRED AREA ALLOW
A SMALL DROPLET OF OIL TO FLOW..ANOTHER
PLACE THAT OILING MAY HELP IS THE DRIVE
MOTOR. REMOVE THE BLACK 'DOT' STICKER ON
THE TOP SIDE OF THE DRIVE MOTOR AND PLA
CE ONE SMALL DROPLET OF OIL ONTO THE DRI
VE SHAFT..AFTER HAVING CLEANED AND OILED
THE DRIVE UNIT, THE DRIVE SHOULD NOW BE
CHECKED FOR PROPER OPERATION. WITHE THE
P.C. BOARD INSULATED PLUG THE DRIVE INT
O THE VOLTAGE SOURCE AND THE COMPUTER AN
D RUN THE PRVIOUSLY SAVED PROGRAM. IF TH
E DRIVE UNIT IS STILL INOPERATIVE, ERROR
MESSAGES WILL APPEAR AND THE ALIGNMENT
SHOULD BE PERFORMED...TO BEGIN THE ALIGN
MENT, UNPLUG THE DRIVE. LOOSEN THE END-S
