......................`.. .. .. .... I
T WAS MID.MORNING ON A COLD AND WET APRI
L DAY HERE AT CDRS. I HAD DIS. PATC
HED MY MORNING ASSIGNMENTS AND HAD MENT
ALLY TRANSPORTED MYSELF TO A WARM SUMM
ER'S BASEBALL GAME, WHEN IN SAUN
TERED INSPECTOR LA VIE. NOW I EMPH
ASIZE THE WORD SAUNTERED. INSPECTORLA V
IE USUALLY IS RUSHING AROUND FRAN
TICALLY . SOMETHING MUST BE UP. .`..
 .. .. .... 'CICERO,' HE SAID SMUGLY,
'I HAD A VERY INTERESTING CASE LAST NI
GHT THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT.
' I SIGHED. I KNEW HE HAD SOLVED
A GOOD ONEAND WANTED TO SEE IF HE COULD
STUMP ME. 'GO AHEAD, INSPECTOR,' I REPL
IED. .`.. .. .. .... THE INSPECT
OR CONTINUED, 'I HAD A CALL AROUND 10
PM. IT SEEMS THAT GEORGECARBERRY CAME
HOME FROM A BUSINESS MEETING TO FIN
D HIS BROTHER BILL SHOT INTHE LIBRARY.
AT FIRST GLANCE, IT APPEARED THAT
HE HAD BEEN KILLED BY AN OUTSIDE INTRUD
ER. BUT I AM GETTING AHEAD OF MYSEL
F. LET ME DESCRIBE THE SCENE OF THE C
RIME. .`.. .. .. ...
. BILL WAS FOUND IN THE FIRST FLOOR
LIBRARY SLUMPED OVER HIS DESK, HIS HEAD
RESTING ON A LEDGER BOOK. HE HAD BEEN
SHOT AT CLOSE RANGE. ALSO ON THE DESK,
NEATLY ARRANGED, WERE THE USUAL BLOTTER
,CALENDAR, PENS, PHONE AND STILL WARM
 CARAFE OF COFFEE.
 .`.. .. .. .... THE ROOM ITSELF WAS I
MMACULATE AND CONTAINED, IN ADDITION T
O THE DESK, SEVERAL FINE PIECES IN R
OSEWOOD, A LARGEBOOKCASE AND AN EXQUISIT
E COLLECTION OF ORIENTAL RUGS. THE WIND
OW ON THE OPPOSITE WALL FROM THE D
ESK WAS WIDE OPEN AND THERE WERE FOOT
PRINTS LEADING TO AND FROM THE WINDOW O
UTSIDE IN THE MUD. TO MAKE A LONG STO
RY SHORT, I TOOKIN THE BROTHER, GEORGE,
FOR QUESTIONING.DO YOU KNOW WHAT LED ME
TO REJECT THE THEORY OF THE OUTSIDE IN
TRUDER?' .`.. .. .. .... WELL,
OF COURSE, IT WAS FAIRLY OBVIOUS T
O ME WHAT LED THE INSPECTOR TO SUSPEC
T GEORGE. DO YOU KNOW WHY BILLWAS NOT S
HOT BY THE 'OUTSIDE INTRUDER?' .

. .. ....ANSWER AND EXPLANATION:

            THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THA
T THE INSPECTOR ASTUTELY NOTICED ABOU
T THE ROOM. IN THE FIRST PLACE, ALTH
OUGH IT WAS MUDDY OUTSIDE, THERE WERE N
O FOOTPRINTS LEADING FROM THE WIN
DOW TO THE DESK WHICH MEANS THAT THE I
NTRUDER WOULD HAVE HAD TO SHOOT BILL FR
OM ACROSSTHE ROOM. BUT THIS WAS NOT THE
CASE AS THE EVIDENCE SUGGESTED THAT HE
WAS SHOT AT CLOSE RANGE.
         .`.. .. .. ....ANSWER AND EXPLA
NATION:
                           THE SECOND IT
EM THAT CAUGHT THE INSPECTOR'S ATTE
NTION WAS THE FACT THAT THERE WERE NO SI
GNS OF A STRUGGLE. CERTAINLY BILL W
OULD HAVE HEARD THE INTRUDER OPEN TH
E WINDOW AND GOT UP TO INVESTIGATE. TH
EREFORE, THE INSPECTOR REASONED THAT BI
LL PROBABLY KNEW HIS MURDERER.
                           LASTLY, EVEN
THOUGH GEORGE HAD AN ALIBI FOR THE EV
ENING, THE INSPECTOR THOUGHT THAT HE
COULD HAVE MURDERED BILLUPON HIS RETURN.
THE FACT THAT THE COFFEE CARAFE WA
S STILL WARM SUPPORTED THIS REASONING.
                        .`.. .. .. ....A
NSWER AND EXPLANATION:

AS IT TURNED OUT, OF COURSE, THE I
NSPECTOR WAS CORRECT. THE POLICE LATERF
OUND A PAIR OF MUDDY SHOES IN GEORGE'S C
LOSET. ALSO UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION O
F THE LEDGER AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS OF T
HE BROTHERS, IT TURNED OUT THAT GEORGE H
AD BEEN CHEATING BILL AND WAS AFRAID T
HAT HE HAD FOUND OUT. .
`.. .. .. ....
